Empowering women is the central theme of a new initiative as GOYN Tanga and TangaYetu launch a specialized bus conductorship training for 50 young women in Tanga City. The initiative, a collaboration between the Global Opportunity Youth Network (GOYN) Tanga and TangaYetu, is specifically designed to equip young women with the high-level professional skills and standards needed to thrive and excel in the country’s transport sector. The goal is to ensure equal and meaningful participation for women in this key industry.

Training for Women in Transport: Professional Skills and Safety Education
Training for women in transport is underway at the VETA Technical College in Tanga, running for six days (October 20–25, 2025). The sessions, facilitated by Ms. Lydia Kamugisha of the National Institute of Transport (NIT), are providing essential skills for professional success. Participants are learning about professional conductorship operations, critical work ethics, excellence in customer service, effective financial and ticket management, and comprehensive transport laws and regulations. Crucially, they are also receiving detailed road safety education to guarantee efficiency and safety in their future careers.

Empowering Women: Building Confidence and Combating Gender-Based Violence
Empowering women goes beyond technical skills in this program, focusing significantly on building confidence and combating gender-based violence (GBV). Ms. Kamugisha emphasized that the training is designed to help young women understand their self-worth and develop strategies to protect themselves from gender-based violence. Additionally, they are being equipped with vital soft skills, including effective communication, technology use, and personal hygiene and health maintenance, to become skilled, ethical, and exemplary professionals in the transport industry.

GOYN Tanga Director Commends Collaboration and Urges Discipline
GOYN Tanga Director, Mr. Omar Bakari, commended the collaboration with the Tanga City Transporters’ Union (MUWATA), emphasizing its role in the success of the program. Mr. Bakari urged MUWATA to continue its support to ensure the sustainability of the training for future youth cohorts. Furthermore, he encouraged the participating young women to remain disciplined, focused, and committed throughout their studies, stressing that this opportunity is a vital stepping stone toward moral and economic empowerment through the transport sector.
Sustainable Livelihoods: GOYN’s Commitment to Empowering Women
Sustainable livelihoods are the ultimate objective of this initiative, serving as a clear demonstration of GOYN Tanga’s ongoing commitment to empowering women. The project is dedicated to opening new opportunities for young women, ensuring they enjoy equal participation in the transport sector and can successfully build resilient and sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their communities.
