International Women’s Day preparations in Tanga reached a meaningful milestone as the Global Opportunity Youth Network (GOYN–Tanga), in partnership with the Tanga City Council, visited female inmates at Maweni Prison. This outreach, conducted through the Department of Community Development, focused on providing essential supplies and emotional encouragement to women within the correctional system ahead of the March 8 global climax.
GOYN–Tanga and Tanga City Council Drive Community Impact
Community development initiatives were at the heart of this visit, which aligns with the broader goals of International Women’s Day to recognize women’s achievements and advocate for gender equality. Members of the Youth Advisory Group (YAG) took a leading role in the “build-up” activities, mobilizing resources to ensure that marginalized women are not left out of the national celebrations.

Essential Supplies Donated to Maweni Prison Inmates
Maweni Prison female inmates received a variety of basic necessities collected by the youth volunteers. The donation, handed over by Tanga City Council visit coordinator Ms. Erica Njana, included:
- Sanitary pads and body lotion.
- Laundry soap and toothpaste.
- Cooking oil and other hygiene essentials.
Prison Officials Appreciate Stakeholder Support
Maweni Prison Officer in Charge, Ms. Theresia Msangi, expressed profound gratitude to the women of Tanga and project stakeholders. She highlighted that the prison faces persistent challenges in securing consistent supplies of hygiene products and cooking oil, noting that this donation provides both physical relief and a sense of belonging to the inmates.

Empowering Women and Youth through Vision 2050
Youth and women’s empowerment remains the core mission of GOYN–Tanga, especially under this year’s theme: “Rights, Equality and Empowerment for All Women and Girls: Building an Inclusive Foundation Towards Vision 2050.” By reaching into correctional facilities, the project ensures that the “inclusive foundation” mentioned in the theme extends to every woman, regardless of her circumstances.
