Sustainable Aquaculture and Fisheries Innovations

Sustainable aquaculture and fisheries innovations were showcased as viable business models. Dennis Onkangi, CEO of Kuza Freezer, shared how his company empowers small-scale fishers through solar-powered freezers offered under a “Pay-As-You-Go” model. He noted that since 2021, this technology has significantly increased fish value and improved the incomes of fishing communities. In another session on Sustainable Aquaculture Value Chains, expert Joanne Muchai presented key statistics: Tanzania produces 772,000 metric tonnes of fish and 215,000 metric tonnes of seaweed, vastly outpacing Kenya’s 168,000 (fish) and 1,000 (seaweed). This data led to a strong call for greater investment in research, technology, and youth participation to strengthen this vital sector.
