Transport skills training is the driving force behind the latest initiative by the Global Opportunity Youth Network (GOYN) Tanga project. The organization has continued to offer specialized training to young people in Tanga City across various transport sectors. This ongoing effort is designed to equip them with essential skills, expand employment opportunities, and create sustainable avenues for self-employment. The comprehensive training covers two key sectors: passenger bus transport and motorcycle (bodaboda) riding, demonstrating the project’s dual commitment to improving youth livelihoods and significantly reducing road accidents.

Passenger Bus Service Training: Phase Two at VETA Tanga
Passenger bus service training is currently in its second phase at the VETA Technical College in Tanga, involving a dedicated cohort of 30 youths from different wards across the city. The training, which began on March 17 and is scheduled to conclude on March 21, 2025, follows the immense success of the first phase. That initial round saw 50 youths benefit, with many already securing gainful employment in various passenger bus companies. Ms. Honesta Msaki, the Training Coordinator for Passenger Bus Service Providers, emphasized the importance of appreciating this opportunity and demonstrating cooperation to ensure the program’s success.

Youth Development Opportunities: Accessing the TangaYetu Hub
Youth development opportunities are readily available for those who seek them, according to GOYN Tanga Coordinator, Ms. Khadija. She encouraged the participants to fully utilize the training by learning diligently and becoming ambassadors of these opportunities for their peers. She also urged them to visit the TangaYetu offices located in Bombo, Central Ward, which serve as a vital youth-friendly hub for accessing information and further developmental support. In a related effort to expand skills, Ms. Khadija held discussions with VETA Tanga Registrar, Mr. George Sydney, regarding support for 21 youth undergoing carpentry training in the Gofu area, aimed at helping them achieve self-employment.

Road Safety and Licensing: Bodaboda Training at Bandiwe College
Road safety and licensing were the primary objectives of the recently completed bodaboda training, conducted at Bandiwe College in Mwanzange. Concluding on Monday, November 17, 2025, the training benefited a total of 36 young people. The curriculum focused on enabling them to obtain riding licenses, understand road signs, and strictly comply with road safety regulations. Mr. Hussein Kombo, Chief Instructor at Bandiwe Driving College, urged trainees to adhere to traffic rules to avoid accidents. One beneficiary, Shinoni Rashidi, noted that the training significantly improved his understanding, stating, “Now I believe I will be a responsible and careful driver.”

Reducing Road Accidents Through Skilled Youth Employment
Reducing road accidents while boosting the local economy remains the core mission of GOYN Tanga. Overall, the training programs in both passenger bus transport and bodaboda riding demonstrate a strong commitment to equipping young people with practical skills. Through strategic collaborations with institutions such as VETA and Bandiwe, the project continues to create an enabling environment for youth in Tanga to actively participate in economic activities and community development.
